Form Finding by Shape Optimization and Vertex Morphing | New Developments and Challenging Applications

10:00 - 11:00 Campus Library, Level 3, Room 3118, Seaside

Vertex Morphing has been introduced as a most powerful numerical tool for shape optimization and form finding of structures.

Vertex Morphing has been introduced as a most powerful numerical tool for shape optimization and form finding of structures. The filtering of sensitivity information together with basic FEM discretization is used to generate shapes of higher continuity and supreme surface quality alternative to standard CAD approaches with NURBS and other spline approximations. As a most convincing feature Vertex Morphing allows to formulate and perform the largest design spaces possible with the least amount of effort. It is most attractive for shape optimization in the early stages of design and to naturally add on to digital design strategies including additive manufacturing. The contribution will report about the actual status of development and challenging fields of applications of structural and fluid shape optimization and their interactions, in particular for large and thin shell and membrane structures. A special technological focus will be on CAD geometry recovery and to present a consistent design and methodological framework ready to be used for sophisticated academic and practical application.
